Gang uses gay dating app for Coimbatore robbery, three inmates

Coimbatore District (Rural) Police on Tuesday arrested three members of a local gang accused of stealing money, mobile phone and jewelry from people after tricking them using an app of gay dating.

Police said Logesh Godwin (19), S. Aswin (19) and S. Suresh (33) from Narasimhanaickenpalayam were arrested by a special police squad. Two other gang members –– R. Prabakaran (24) from Narasimhanaickenpalayam and R. Vignesh (23) from KK Nagar near Saibaba settlement –– were arrested by Saibaba settlement police in a separate case flight on February 5.

Thadagam Police received a complaint against the gang from a 23-year-old man from Erode who works in Thondamuthur. His complaint said the defendant invited him to a deserted place in Somaiyanaur near Thadagam on January 22 using ‘Grindr’, a gay dating app.

When he arrived at the scene, the gang threatened him and stole his cell phone and two sovereign gold chains. The accused asked him to share the PIN code of his UPI payment application, but he refused to give it. The accused then attacked the youth with a stone and left the scene.

A special team was formed to catch the accused based on the complaint filed by the native of Erode.

Police broke up the gang on Tuesday and arrested three of its members. Police recovered a mobile phone, a two-sovereign chain and ₹40,000 from the three. They were brought before a magistrate and taken into custody.
